Today marks the 82nd Anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, which outlined how Hitler and Stalin would divide Central and Eastern Europe between Nazi Germany and the U.S.S.R.

This Pact led directly to the invasion of Poland from the West by Nazi Germany on September 1, 1939, and then from the East by the Soviet Union on September 17, 1939.

The ensuing occupations by these brutal totalitarian regimes led to the deaths of millions of people across Central and Eastern Europe. Every August 23 on #BlackRibbonDay we take time to remember those victims.
