Today we commemorate 76th Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino also known as the Battle for Rome, one of the most Important Battles of World War II. Final battle won by the Polish 2nd Corps commanded by Gen. Władysław Anders. Capture of Monte Cassino came at a high price. The Allies suffered around 55,000 casualties in the Monte Cassino campaign. German casualty figures are estimated at around 20,000 killed and wounded. During the fights for Monte Cassino 923 Polish soldiers were killed, 2931 were killed injured and 345 were found missing. At the local war cemetery, there is an inscription: “Passerby, tell Poland that we have fallen faithful in her service.
